Qualifying routes to social work in England

All qualifying routes in England must end in a Social Work England–approved qualification: a BA (Hons) Social Work (undergraduate, typically 3 years); an MA/MSc Social Work (postgraduate, typically 2 years); Step Up to Social Work — a DfE fast-track of ~14 months to a PGDip in children’s social work, with a tax-free bursary of £21,995 for the 2026 cohort paid over 15 months (up from £19,833 over 14 months after a decade frozen; 2026 applications closed — cohorts run roughly every 2 years); Approach Social Work (the Frontline programme, recently renamed) — for graduates, an ~5-week summer course then embedded local-authority/children’s-trust teams, qualifying in ~1 year, DfE-funded tuition plus a bursary of ~£18,000 (£20,000 in London); or the social worker degree apprenticeship (Level 6 integrated degree, standard ST0510, typically 36 months) — salaried with no tuition fees, awarding a BA (Hons) plus the apprenticeship, with off-the-job training per apprenticeship funding rules (minimum average 6 hours/week since 1 August 2022); the revised v2.0 standard is approved for delivery from 25 March 2026 (v1.1 retired). All routes lead to the same thing: eligibility to apply to the SWE register (approved qualification plus health and character declarations) — registration is not automatic on graduating.
