AMHP and BIA — the register-annotation trap
AMHP and BIA are statutory specialisms with Social Work England register annotations — but the annotation only evidences training completed. Current AMHP approval lives with the local authority, so a correct check is register status (SWE) plus approval status (LA).

The routes into social work in England — BA/MA degrees, the Step Up to Social Work fast-track, the Approach Social Work (Frontline) programme, and the Level 6 degree apprenticeship (ST0510). All end in an SWE-approved qualification; registration is not automatic on graduating.

The specialist statutory regulator for social workers in England only — it took over from the HCPC on 2 December 2019. Using the title "social worker" in England without registration is a criminal offence, and the register is publicly searchable for free.

The SWE registration year runs 1 December to 30 November (renewal window 1 September–30 November). Fees are on a multi-year escalator — £120 from 1 December 2025, rising ~1.85%/year to 2028–29 — and renewal is hard-gated on a minimum of 2 CPD pieces, at least 1 with a peer reflection.

Social work is safeguarding-critical and — unlike medicine or nursing — has no UK-wide register: "social worker" is a protected title in each UK nation under its own legislation, on its own register, with its own regulator.
