The Verifera™ Encyclopaedia — Careers edition
HCPC
Verified reference for UK professional registers, credentials and career pathways. Every entry shows its sources and last-verified date — the “Verified by Verifera” mark appears only when all facts are in-window.
Clinical psychology — the DClinPsy bottleneck
The clinical route is the most competitive credential in the corpus: apply via the BPS Clearing House, the NHS funds most places, trainees are employed as Trainee Clinical Psychologists at the bottom of Band 6, and the 3-year doctorate confers eligibility for HCPC registration as a Clinical Psychologist plus BPS Chartered status.
✔ Verified by VeriferaRegisterHCPC — the statutory register for practitioner psychologists
The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) regulates practitioner psychologists and protects nine titles by law. The HCPC Register is the public, statutory source of truth — the cleanest, highest-value verification target in the domain once you know the right title to look for.
✔ Verified by VeriferaCredentialHCPC international application route
How overseas-trained professionals join the HCPC register — by mapping their qualifications to the Standards of Proficiency, with evidenced English-language proficiency. From November 2025 a mandatory mapping document applies.
✔ Verified by VeriferaCredentialHCPC registration
The UK route for the 15 HCPC professions: an HCPC-approved degree (or apprenticeship) meeting the Standards of Proficiency, then registration — after which the profession's title is protected.
✔ Verified by VeriferaCredentialHCPC renewal and CPD audit
HCPC registrants renew every two years; at each renewal the HCPC randomly audits 2.5% of each profession's CPD (recent graduates are not audited at first renewal).
✔ Verified by VeriferaRegisterHealth and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
The umbrella UK regulator for 15 health and care professions — including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, paramedics, radiographers and dietitians. (Social workers in England moved to Social Work England in 2019, so HCPC now regulates 15, not 16.)
✔ Verified by VeriferaGuideInternational comparison — US, Australia and Canada
The UK regulates via HCPC registration under a protected title with no national exam. The US licenses state-by-state and requires a doctorate plus the EPPP. Australia registers nationally via the Psychology Board of Australia (mid-transition off the 4+2 / 5+1 pathways). Canada licenses by province, with the EPPP required everywhere except Quebec.
✔ Verified by VeriferaGuideIs my psychologist HCPC-registered? The correct verification check
The primary, non-substitutable check is an HCPC Register match on the specific protected title. BPS Chartered status is advisory only — never accept CPsychol in place of an HCPC check, and reject a bare-"psychologist" claim as unverifiable against a register.
✔ Verified by VeriferaCredentialOverseas psychologist → HCPC (including the Test of Competence)
An overseas-qualified psychologist enters via the HCPC international application route, assessed against the standards of proficiency for a specific protected title. Three outcomes: successful, a Test of Competence, or unsuccessful — a US/AU/CA psychologist is not automatically transferable.
✔ Verified by VeriferaProfessionPhysiotherapist
The largest allied health profession. In the UK, registered with the HCPC; the international comparison runs across the US (NPTE/FSBPT), Australia (APC) and Canada (CAPR).
✔ Verified by VeriferaProfessionPsychologist — the protected-title trap
The bare word "psychologist" is NOT protected by law — but nine specific psychologist titles ARE. A register check that just confirms someone is "on a psychology list" is worthless; the verification value lives entirely in pinning the exact protected specialism title to the HCPC Register.
✔ Verified by VeriferaPathwayRoutes to each protected title — the specialism-specific pathways
From a GBC degree, the specialism determines the postgraduate route — a professional doctorate for clinical/counselling/educational, or a BPS-accredited Stage-1 MSc plus Stage-2 supervised practice for forensic/health/occupational/sport — all ending in HCPC registration under the matching protected title.
✔ Verified by VeriferaCredentialThe nine HCPC-protected psychologist titles
HCPC protects nine titles: two generic statutory titles (Practitioner psychologist, Registered psychologist) and the seven specialism titles registrants actually use. The two generics cannot be the sole registration title — match the specialism title, not the generic word, to the register.
