Chartered Engineer (CEng) and the registration ladder

Engineering’s professional ladder runs EngTech → IEng → CEng (with ICTTech alongside), each assessed against UK-SPEC. A candidate joins the relevant Professional Engineering Institution, which advises the eligible grade, then undergoes a professional review — a written application plus, for IEng and CEng, a professional review interview. CEng typically requires an accredited master’s-level education base (or demonstrated equivalent) plus recorded competence. Chartership is the recognised seniority signal for design sign-off, consultancy and framework eligibility, even though it is not legally required to hold an engineering job.
