There are two routes onto the Register of Veterinary Nurses: a Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (FE college or training provider) or an RCVS-accredited veterinary nursing degree. Both require 2,990 total training hours, at least 1,800 in clinical practice, plus Day One Skills / Schedule 3 competence. Newly qualified nurses must register within 12 weeks of qualifying or the application suspends. Overseas-trained VNs whose qualification is recognised by the education ministry where gained, has similar content to UK VN qualifications, and is backed by practice experience can register; ACOVENE-accredited qualifications skip the pre-registration exam, while others sit it (and may work under supervision for up to one year while preparing).
