The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) is the UK-wide statutory regulator for osteopaths, created by the Osteopaths Act 1993; it produced the first statutory Register of Osteopaths in 2000. Unlike optometry (two professions) or dentistry (dentists plus DCPs), the GOsC register is one profession, one title covering England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (UK-wide, not devolved) — the cleanest possible “check the register” surface. The public Search the Register is updated daily and is the only complete list of UK osteopaths, searchable by surname, registration number, town/county/postcode/country. Crucially for verification, fitness-to-practise indicators show on the register: undertakings, conditions of practice and current suspensions are flagged against the entry, so a register check returns not just “registered y/n” but practice-status state. The GOsC runs a statutory FtP process under the 1993 Act (Investigating Committee → Professional Conduct Committee / Health Committee) with sanctions up to removal from the register.
