Pharmacy technician — a GB protected title (GPhC Part 2)

Pharmacy technician is its own regulated profession — not a junior grade of pharmacist. It became a statutory, registered profession in Great Britain on 1 July 2011, and “pharmacy technician” (and the Welsh “technegydd fferylliaeth”) is a legally protected title held in Part 2 of the GPhC register. Only a registered pharmacy technician (Part 2) may use the title, and only the registered technician carries fitness-to-practise accountability and — from the 2026 supervision reform — the expanded delegated scope. The pharmacy floor also contains several unregistered support roles (dispensing/pharmacy assistants, trainee technicians, medicines counter assistants) that look similar but are not on any register and are not protected titles, so the single most valuable verification question is whether a “technician” is actually registered on Part 2 or an unregistered Level-2 assistant using the word loosely.
