ARB registration — the legal credential and the durable check
ARB registration ('Registered Architect') is the legal credential that confers the right to use the protected title 'architect'. The register check — is a named person currently on the ARB Register — is route-agnostic, which is what makes it durable while the qualification route is being rewritten.

ARB is the statutory regulator and the legal register — registration is mandatory to call yourself an architect. RIBA Chartered membership is a voluntary professional-body credential on a separate roll. They are different credentials on different registers and must never be treated as interchangeable.

The current route to ARB registration is the three-part ladder: Part 1 (an ARB-accredited undergraduate degree) → Part 2 (an ARB-accredited postgraduate qualification) → Part 3 (the professional practice exam), with at least 24 months of supervised practical experience across the route. This model is being phased out under the ARB education reform.

UK registration is anchored to UK-accredited programmes, so overseas-qualified architects enter through a small set of mutual-recognition agreements (US via NCARB; Australia/New Zealand via AACA & NZRAB) plus a frozen post-Brexit EU/EEA route. There is no large conversion funnel here — the international layer is deliberately light.

ARB is replacing the Part 1/2/3 structure with a competency-outcomes model accredited by Academic Outcomes and Practice Outcomes. New Master's, Practice and Combined qualifications are offered from H2 2026; Part 1 accreditation ceases around 2027 and Part 2/3 accreditation ends by end of December 2028.
