Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS)

✔ Verified by Verifera

The UK regulator of the veterinary professions — both the statutory regulator and the royal college in one body, under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. It keeps two separate registers (veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses) plus a list of registered practice premises, all checkable via Find a Vet / Check the Register.

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) regulates the UK veterinary professions. Veterinary is the only major UK clinical profession regulated outside the health-regulator family — the RCVS is both the statutory regulator and the royal college in one body, under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 (older than the Medical Act 1983). The register is UK-wide, with no devolution split. The RCVS keeps the Register of Veterinary Surgeons (statutory), the Register of Veterinary Nurses, and a list of registered veterinary practice premises. Status is checkable via Find a Vet / Check the Register — but a vet can be on the register in a non-practising category, so a verification check must read the registration category, not just presence.

Sources & verification

  • The RCVS keeps the Register of Veterinary Surgeons (statutory, under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966), the Register of Veterinary Nurses, and a list of registered veterinary practice premises — source, verified 2026-06-10
  • Find a Vet / Check the Register searches veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses and practices by name, location or reference number, and also flags Fellows, Specialists and Advanced Practitioners — source, verified 2026-06-10
  • Registration has categories (UK-practising / practising outside the UK / non-practising) — a vet can be on the register but in a non-practising category, so a verification check must read the category, not just presence — source, verified 2026-06-10
  • Vet renewal is due 1 April (higher fee 1–31 May, removal from the Register if unpaid by 31 May); veterinary nurse renewal cycle runs 1 November to 31 October — register state is time-sensitive around both windows — source, verified 2026-06-12
