How to become a veterinary surgeon in the UK — the pathway

RCVS registration confers MRCVS — the licence to practise. Nine UK schools' degrees are currently accepted for registration, with three new schools (Aberystwyth, SRUC, UCLan) mid-accreditation.

Two doors: a recognised degree (EAEVE-accredited European — only until January 2029; AVMA-CoE-accredited US with a board score ≥425; listed Australian degrees or the NVE/AVE) registers directly; everyone else sits the RCVS statutory membership exam.

The route to RCVS registration for vets whose degree is not on a recognised list — a written stage (MCQ plus open-book Code paper across three clinical areas) followed by a multi-station OSCE, on a roughly 15-month end-to-end cycle.

A separate RCVS register with a different legal basis from veterinary surgeons. "Registered Veterinary Nurse" (RVN) may only be used once registered — but the generic title "veterinary nurse" has no statutory protection, a headline item in the live VSA reform.

The UK regulator of the veterinary professions — both the statutory regulator and the royal college in one body, under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. It keeps two separate registers (veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses) plus a list of registered practice premises, all checkable via Find a Vet / Check the Register.

Two routes to the RCVS nurse register: a Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing or an RCVS-accredited veterinary nursing degree — both requiring 2,990 total training hours (at least 1,800 in clinical practice) — then registration within 12 weeks of qualifying.

Australia/NZ: the AVBC's recognised-qualifications list includes RCVS-accredited UK degrees, so UK grads generally register directly (otherwise the AVE); NZ runs through VCNZ. Canada: the NEB Certificate of Qualification is the prerequisite for every provincial licence.

Three independent reform clocks are running: Defra's consultation on reforming the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 (closed 25 March 2026, outcome awaited), the CMA's 14 sector remedies (final report 24 March 2026), and the end of EAEVE automatic recognition in January 2029.

A statute-protected profession: "veterinary surgeon" and MRCVS are protected by the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, and RCVS registration is the licence to practise. The founding statute is mid-reform following Defra's 2026 consultation.
