Independent prescribing at registration (from Sept 2026)

✔ Verified by Verifera

From 2026 — first cohort registering summer 2026 — newly-qualified pharmacists trained to the GPhC's 2021 standards are automatically annotated as independent prescribers at the point of registration — the biggest recent change to UK pharmacy.

From 2026, with the first cohort joining the register in summer 2026, newly-qualified pharmacists trained to the GPhC’s 2021 initial education and training standards — who pass the registration assessment and meet the criteria (including Designated Prescribing Practitioner sign-off) — are automatically annotated as independent prescribers at the point of registration. This is the single biggest recent change to UK pharmacy. Note the asymmetry: pre-2021-standards graduates and those qualifying via OSPAP are not automatically prescribers at registration.
