Pharmacy technician supervision reform — the phased 2026 scope change

The Human Medicines (Authorisation by Pharmacists and Supervision by Pharmacy Technicians) Order 2025 amends the Medicines Act 1968 and the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, materially expanding what a registered pharmacy technician may do — the biggest scope change in the profession’s history. It is phased with named dates: from 7 January 2026 pharmacists may authorise pharmacy team members to hand out “checked and bagged” prescriptions (new reg 220B); from 10 December 2026 pharmacists may authorise pharmacy technicians to undertake or supervise the preparation, assembly, dispensing and sale/supply of medicines (and to take primary responsibility for prep/assembly/dispensing in hospital aseptic facilities), with a one-year transition to 9 December 2027 while supporting professional standards are developed. Separately, since 26 June 2024 pharmacy technicians may already supply/administer medicines under a Patient Group Direction (PGD). A stale article will describe the role as it was in 2023, so scope claims must carry the effective date.
