The route for overseas optometrists is changing fundamentally. Until September 2026 the GOC individually assesses an international applicant’s eligibility. From September 2026 the GOC will no longer mandatorily pre-assess — most international applicants must enrol in a GOC-approved UK qualification that meets the Education and Training Requirements (ETR). A direct-entry route is now live for some countries — immediate for the US and Canada, and with clinical-experience evidence for Australia, New Zealand and Ireland.
