The Engineering Council is the UK regulatory body for engineering. It holds the national registers — EngTech (Engineering Technician), IEng (Incorporated Engineer), CEng (Chartered Engineer) and ICTTech — covering over 229,000 registrants. You register through a licensed Professional Engineering Institution (such as IMechE, ICE, IET or IChemE), not directly, against the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). Importantly, “engineer” is not a protected title in the UK — these registered designations are voluntary professional recognition, not a legal licence to do engineering work.
