In the UK, a veterinary surgeon must be registered with the RCVS — registration confers MRCVS, the licence to practise, and the titles are protected by the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. Internationally the structure differs sharply: the US uses a 4-year post-graduate DVM, the NAVLE and state veterinary boards; Australia and New Zealand run on AVBC-accredited degrees with state/territory boards (Australia) and VCNZ (New Zealand); Canada uses the NEB Certificate of Qualification then provincial regulators. The UK’s founding statute is mid-reform: Defra consulted on reforming the VSA 1966 in early 2026.
