Overseas Optometrists: GOC’s Revised Registration Route

✔ Verified by Verifera

The GOC is revising how overseas-qualified optometrists join the register. Optometrists who qualified in the United States or Canada may already be eligible for direct entry; other applicants are currently assessed by a panel of non-UK assessors, and a new international application process is expected to come into effect in early 2027.

The route for overseas optometrists is being revised. Under the GOC’s current process, optometrists who qualified in the United States or Canada may be eligible for direct entry to the register, while other overseas-qualified applicants have their qualifications and experience assessed by a panel of non-UK assessors against the UK standards of competence and may be invited to interview. The GOC says a new international application process is expected to come into effect in early 2027. As announced in November 2025, it offers two routes: direct entry, or a short GOC-approved qualification lasting no longer than a year that meets the Education and Training Requirements (ETR). US and Canadian qualifications were assessed as enabling direct entry, and applicants from Australia, New Zealand and Ireland may evidence sufficient clinical experience for direct entry.
