Engineering Council

✔ Verified by Verifera

The UK regulatory body for the engineering profession. It holds the national registers (EngTech, IEng, CEng, ICTTech), which you join through a licensed Professional Engineering Institution against the UK-SPEC standard.

The Engineering Council is the UK regulatory body for engineering. It holds the national registers — EngTech (Engineering Technician), IEng (Incorporated Engineer), CEng (Chartered Engineer) and ICTTech — covering over 229,000 registrants. You register through a licensed Professional Engineering Institution (such as IMechE, ICE, IET or IChemE), not directly, against the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). Importantly, “engineer” is not a protected title in the UK — these registered designations are voluntary professional recognition, not a legal licence to do engineering work.

Entry requirements & restrictions

Evidence needed for registration
Record of professional development (portfolio of evidence) assessed in a Professional Review against UK-SPEC or the ICTTech standard. IEng and CEng also have a professional review interview. Knowledge assessment may require a technical report or technical interview. Each PEI sets its own process and may add requirements[6]
