GPhC Part 2 — the pharmacy technician register

The General Pharmaceutical Council keeps three Great Britain registers — pharmacists (Part 1), pharmacy technicians (Part 2) and premises. Part 2 is the load-bearing field: a verification check must read which register part, not just presence.

Credential

GPhC Part 2 registration and revalidation

Completing an approved qualification plus two years' work-based experience gives entry to Part 2 of the GPhC register and the protected title — applied for within five years of starting or two years of completing a recognised course, then maintained by annual revalidation.

Pathway

How to become a pharmacy technician in Great Britain — the pathway

A GPhC-approved Level 3 qualification (diploma or integrated apprenticeship) plus a minimum of two years' work-based experience leads to entry on Part 2 of the GPhC register, the protected title, and ongoing annual revalidation.

Pathway

Overseas pharmacy technician → GPhC — recognition is limited

There is no automatic recognition and no dedicated streamlined international route for overseas-qualified pharmacy technicians today. The GPhC may require adaptation and/or an aptitude test, and many applicants in practice effectively re-qualify; a dedicated international route is under review but not yet in force.

Profession

Pharmacy technician — a GB protected title (GPhC Part 2)

Pharmacy technician is its own regulated profession — not a junior grade of pharmacist. It became a statutory, registered profession in Great Britain on 1 July 2011, and "pharmacy technician" is a legally protected title held in Part 2 of the GPhC register.

Guide

Registered pharmacy technician vs unregistered support staff — the verification wedge

Only a registered pharmacy technician (Part 2) holds the protected title and fitness-to-practise accountability. Dispensing/pharmacy assistants (Level 2), trainee technicians and medicines counter assistants are unregistered and not protected — a clean binary a register check answers.
