Junior Software Engineer

28,000 to £35,000 pa depending on experience

About Podfather

At Podfather, we believe in the potential of every team member. We build software solutions that drive real‑world success for our customers, and we know that our future relies on nurturing the next generation of engineering talent.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self‑motivated Junior Software Engineer to join our supportive, hands‑on development team. If you are an early‑career engineer eager to build your skills, learn from senior mentors, and make a meaningful impact on a growing business, your journey starts here.

The role: learning, growing, and delivering

As a Junior Software Engineer, you will dive straight into the software engineering world by working on well‑defined tasks. You won't be doing it alone, you will collaborate closely with senior engineers and our Lead Software Engineer, who will guide you every step of the way. Over time, as your confidence and codebase knowledge grow, you’ll take on increasingly complex challenges and gain greater independence.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver quality code: Write clean, functional code and documentation according to Podfather’s coding standards.
• Collaborative code reviews: Actively participate in the code review process, both preparing your code for deployment with the Lead Engineer and, over time, reviewing code from other teams.
• Security mindset: Learn and implement secure coding practices, enforce access control (the principle of least privilege), manage secure patches/updates, and assist with system monitoring.
• Team collaboration: Stay in regular communication with your team lead and peers, share progress updates, and flag blockers early to help the team meet its collective goals.

What we are looking for

We value passion, curiosity, and mindset just as much as your current technical ability. We are looking for someone who brings:

• A Foundation in STEM subjects: For software engineers that means a good understanding of core software development principles, such as object‑oriented design, SOLID principles, and coding best practices. For candidates with a mathematical background, it’s a good understanding of discrete mathematics, linear algebra, combinatorics, and a desire to learn programming.
• An Insatiable Curiosity: A desire to understand how complex systems work, a proactive approach to asking questions, and a drive to expand your technical skills quickly.
• Strong Communication: The ability to communicate effectively with more experienced engineers, accept feedback graciously, and collaborate openly.
• A Proactive Mindset: Someone who doesn't just wait to be told what to do, but brings fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and initiative to every task.

What's in it for you?

• Mentorship & career growth: Direct guidance from senior engineering talent and a structured path toward independence.
• Holistic development: You won't just learn to code; you'll understand the commercial implications of your work and how it drives customer success.
• Ongoing training: Full support and training in security, compliance, development best practices, and new technologies.
• A positive culture: Join a team that values open, honest, and constructive feedback in a supportive environment.
