Software Engineer III, Backend Development, Google Health Labs

Overview

In this role you will design, build, and maintain core infrastructure and components powering Google Health research, including prototypes to test new ideas. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate infrastructure and tools, own services, and participate in on-call rotations. The work spans data processing, serving, and backend systems, contributing to scalable, low-latency solutions. This is an opportunity to shape research-enabled platforms at scale within a multidisciplinary environment.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain shared components and infrastructure across data processing, serving, and development
• Develop prototype systems to test innovative research ideas
• Assist partner teams in integrating with infrastructure and tools
• Own and maintain services, including on-call responsibilities
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary and multi-site teams

Key requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience
• 2 years of software development experience in one or more programming languages (or 1 year with an advanced degree)
• 2 years of experience with data structures and algorithms
• Experience building, evaluating, or deploying LLM applications, conversational agents, or agentic frameworks
• Experience designing and operating scalable, low-latency microservices and distributed backend systems
• Experience with Kotlin, Android and generative AI tools
• Experience with backend software development
