Senior Design Engineer

Overview

In this role you will lead the design of high‑voltage substations and related electrical plant layouts, delivering integrated 3D models and detailed drawings. You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to meet client specifications and support construction and commissioning. The position combines design excellence with safety leadership and tender support, within Murphy’s Applied Engineering practice. You will shape technically robust, cost‑effective substation solutions for multiple sites and projects.

Responsibilities

• Develop 3D models of HV plant layouts for substation projects up to 400kV
• Prepare technical specifications for electrical plant items (circuit breakers, disconnectors, earth switches, instrument transformers)
• Review OEM quotations and integrate supplier data into overall designs
• Create client drawings (AutoCAD) for detailed design aspects (layout, elevations, earthing, interlocking)
• Prepare Design Packages with CAD operators for client review and construction issue
• Provide technical support during construction and commissioning, addressing site queries and design modifications
• Collaborate with other substation engineering sections for multi‑disciplinary projects
• Promote health, safety and environmental best practices with SHQE
• Supervise and mentor assistant engineers, apprentices, and CAD operators
• Support tenders and drive innovative, cost‑effective substations solutions
• Work with Operations and Site Management on construction methodologies, IV management plans and CDM drawings
• Develop knowledge of National Grid Specifications for potential TP137 Contractor Design Approval
• Maintain close collaboration with Principal Engineer, other seniors and Engineering Manager

Key requirements

• HV Electrical Plant layout designs experience (3–4 years)
• Working principles of various electrical plant and instrument transformers
• Understanding of protection and control interfaces for AIS and GIS substations
• Familiarity with National Grid technical specifications for substation design
• Proficiency in Revit, Navisworks (or equivalent 3D systems) and AutoCAD for 3D modeling and 2D drawings
• Knowledge of National Grid Technical Specifications
