Backend Engineer
Overview
In this role you will help Wise evolve into a global financial hub by powering the Grow squad’s two focus areas: scaling an existing product and building a new frontier from scratch. You will collaborate with PMs, designers, and analysts to shape the roadmap and deliver customer value at scale. You’ll work on high-impact areas like a Yield Engine for asset-backed balances and a zero-to-one brokerage infrastructure. Responsibilities
- Architect a high-availability Yield Engine handling billions of assets with near-instant liquidity
- Scale an existing product across multiple regions (UK, EU, Singapore, Australia)
- Define technical foundations and systems for a new brokerage infrastructure from scratch
- Collaborate with product, design, and analytics to determine what to build and why
- Ensure data integrity, performance, and correctness in distributed systems
- Drive incremental milestones that deliver visible customer value
Key requirements
- Strong product mindset focused on user experience
- Excellent communication to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Ability to break down complex projects into incremental milestones
- Experience coordinating cross-team initiatives
- Experience with web applications and distributed systems in production
- Knowledge of design/architectural patterns; code should be clean, performant, and well tested
- Knowledge of Java and Spring Boot; experience with Kafka is a plus
