Principal Electrical Engineer - HV Substation Design (UK & Ireland)

Overview

In this role you lead design delivery for high-voltage substations within a dynamic Transmission and Distribution team. You influence major infrastructure programs from FEED to commissioning and partner with clients on complex projects like grid upgrades. You apply advanced design practices and mentor junior engineers to drive excellence and innovation.

Responsibilities

• Produce primary plant layouts for HV substations
• Lead engineering design input to major infrastructure projects
• Undertake Project Development/Pre-construction activities (optimise cable routes)
• Prepare equipment specifications for HV plant and related equipment
• Develop specifications with technology specialists and external partners
• Create tender specifications and conduct tender evaluations
• Provide design assurance of tender return documentation and supplier meetings
• Review supplier designs during construction, perform manufacturing assurance audits, attend FAT and provide commissioning support
• Be a trusted partner to key clients; mentor junior team members

Key requirements

• Degree in Electrical Engineering
• Experience in consultancy, contractor or utility in the energy sector
• Client experience with National Grid, ESB, EirGrid, SHET, SSE, SPT or similar UK/Ireland transmission entities
• Extensive FEED/detailed design/owner’s engineer experience
• Experience in HV infrastructure design at concept and FEED stages
• Experience in detailed design, design assurance; owner’s engineer experience advantageous
• Understanding of AIS and GIS HV plant equipment
• Strong team player with client-facing mindset
• Ability to work across multiple projects; full driving licence
• Project management experience across budgets, timelines and quality; multi-discipline project management
