Database Reliability Engineer

Overview

In this role you help Starling’s data platforms scale safely and reliably. You will modernize and automate our RDS fleet, build proactive observability, and ensure business continuity across regions. You’ll work on cross-cloud portability and Java-based microservices that manage database monitoring and failover. This position sits at the heart of a fast-paced fintech culture focused on reliable, scalable data services for customers. You’ll collaborate with multiple teams to ship resilient, observable data platforms that power everyday banking.

Responsibilities

• Modernize and scale the RDS fleet, using Terraform to automate maintenance and performance tuning
• Develop deep observability and monitoring for the global database fleet with Prometheus, Grafana, Dash0, Sentry, and Humio
• Design and implement Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery strategies for multi-region data durability
• Architect cross-cloud portability using CNPG and cloud-native patterns for provider-agnostic databases
• Enhance production Java microservices to orchestrate monitoring, auto-failover, and replication workflows

Key requirements

• PostgreSQL experience with core concepts like query execution, indexing, locking, and performance tuning
• Programmatic infrastructure and automation mindset using Terraform and Java
• Interest in distributed systems, multi-tenant and multi-region data platforms
• Security and observability mindset with integration of monitoring and guardrails in Java services
