Software Engineer

Software Engineer: Backend (Python/AWS)

Bristol based: 5 days onsite

Salary: Up to £55,000 + discretionary bonus

Want to build software that plays a real part in how a business operates?

We're working with a growing energy trading business looking for a Software Engineer to join its seven-person engineering team in central Bristol. With bespoke trading platforms already supporting its Great Britain operations and expansion into European markets, there's plenty to get involved in.

You’ll work closely with engineers and traders, building reliable Back End services and data pipelines that support forecasting, trading and day to day business operations.

You don't need previous energy or trading experience: curiosity, sound engineering judgement and a willingness to take ownership matter most.

The role

Sitting between Back End software engineering and data engineering, this position gives you the chance to understand how your work connects to the wider business, including cash management and financial workflows.

You’ll:

• Build and maintain data ingestion services connecting internal systems and external sources.
• Develop Back End services, integrations and workflows that power internal tools.
• Create data transformations, validation and quality checks.
• Help turn forecasting and data science outputs into reliable production services.
• Improve how systems handle failures, retries, monitoring and recovery.
• Work with colleagues across engineering and trading to understand problems and deliver practical solutions.

What we're looking for

You’ll likely have around 2-3 years' experience in Back End or full-stack engineering, alongside a strong academic background in computer science, mathematics, engineering or a related technical subject.

We’d like to see:

• Backend development experience, ideally using Python. Experience with other Back End languages will also be considered.
• Experience working with AWS.
• A good understanding of SQL and relational databases.
• Experience building and maintaining production software.
• An interest in data pipelines, integrations and asynchronous workflows.
• An enthusiastic, practical approach and the confidence to take a task through to completion.

You’ll enjoy asking questions, understanding how things work and thinking beyond the immediate technical task. Previous experience in energy, trading or finance is welcome, but isn't required.

What's on offer

• Up to £55,000 salary.
• Discretionary bonus.
• 30 days' holiday plus bank holidays.
• Private healthcare and dental cover.
• Pension.
• Annual ski trip and regular team socials.
• On-the-job learning, with access to certifications and guidance from industry experts.
• A central Bristol office at Finzels Reach, with gym and pool facilities.

The team places a lot of value on working together in person, so this role is based in the office five days a week.
