Learning Support Assistant
Could you make a difference to secondary school students who are struggling to reach their academic potential? This Learning Support Assistant position offers the opportunity to work closely with young people who have special educational needs, providing individual guidance and focused interventions that improve understanding, engagement and confidence. You will help students overcome barriers to learning while gaining valuable experience of secondary education, specialist support and adolescent development.
Your Duties
Provide dedicated 1:1 assistance to students with special educational needs, helping them understand lesson content, follow instructions and complete classroom activities successfully.
Deliver small-group interventions in English and Maths, addressing gaps in literacy, numeracy and essential subject knowledge that may be affecting academic attainment.
Adapt worksheets, written instructions and classroom resources to accommodate students with learning difficulties, processing challenges and varying levels of academic ability.
Encourage positive learning behaviours by helping students develop concentration, organisational skills, resilience and strategies for managing challenging classroom situations.
Support KS3 and KS4 students with homework, revision techniques and examination preparation, reinforcing key concepts and developing greater independence in their studies.
Work collaboratively with teachers and the SENCO to implement individual support strategies, monitor progress and identify areas where further academic intervention is required.
The School
This secondary school in Willenhall is seeking a committed Learning Support Assistant to help students with additional educational needs make stronger academic progress. The position will involve working with young people across different subjects, supporting those who require additional explanation, personalised guidance and consistent encouragement to participate effectively in lessons. You will develop an understanding of how SEN can affect achievement throughout secondary education, while gaining experience of adapting learning activities, managing classroom expectations and supporting students with different developmental needs. This opportunity would particularly suit someone considering a career in Educational Psychology, SEN teaching or specialist learning support, providing practical experience of the challenges students encounter during KS3 and KS4.
The Requirements
Degree – A 2:2 or above in Psychology, Educational Psychology, Child Development or a closely related discipline, with an understanding of learning and development.
GCSE Qualifications – GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above, demonstrating the academic ability to support secondary students with foundational learning.
Enhanced DBS – An Enhanced DBS certificate with the appropriate children's barred list check is required. Applicants must hold one or be willing to obtain one before starting.
SEN Awareness – An understanding of additional learning needs, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia and difficulties with attention, memory or information processing.
Communication – Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain unfamiliar concepts clearly, build productive relationships with teenagers and maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
Relevant Experience – Previous experience in education, tutoring, mentoring, youth work or supporting individuals with additional needs is desirable, alongside a genuine commitment to improving educational outcomes.
