£32,000–£46,000

If you have strong health and safety experience and can apply it practically across a complex organisation, this is an opportunity to play a key role supporting both central and regional operations at the UK’s largest trade union.

UNISON is the public service union. We bring together the voices of over 1.3 million workers in local government, health, education and outsourced services. Our 1,200 staff work across 12 UK regions and our national centre in London. Regional offices support the work of local branches, helping to represent, recruit, organise and retain members – as well as making key contributions in areas such as campaigning, strategies for negotiation and bargaining, and actions against discrimination.

The role:

As a Health & Safety Coordinator, you’ll work closely with the Staff Health and Safety Officer to ensure UNISON is compliant with legislation, promotes best practices and maintains high safety standards across all locations. You’ll be playing a crucial role in protecting our employees, contractors and visitors while supporting the organisation's commitment to creating a safe working environment.

Your responsibilities will include providing regional health and safety support and monitoring compliance across multiple UK locations and supporting risk assessments. In addition you will help to develop, tailor and deliver training programmes and communications. You will also assist in incident management and reporting, responding to or escalating helpdesk queries, maintaining documentation, systems and records.

The person

What we’re looking for…

  • Good experience in a health and safety support role, ideally across multiple sites or regions.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or an equivalent Level 3 health and safety qualification – plus, ideally, technical membership of IOSH.
  • Good understanding of UK health and safety regulations, ACoPs and Guidance.
  • Knowledge of how to interpret health and safety law and apply it sensibly in a complex organisational setting – including situations where requirements are open to judgement or must be balanced with operational needs.
  • Understanding of how health and safety operates within a trade union or member‑led organisation, including the role of policy, governance, campaigning and internal accountability – ideally with specific knowledge of trade union operations.
  • Knowledge of incident investigation techniques, reporting procedures and auditing processes – plus experience of working within a helpdesk provision.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage with employees at all levels.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities, while also collaborating with and mentoring others.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel and Word – plus, ideally, health and safety management software systems.
