PLOS is a nonprofit Open Access publisher with an ambitious mission: to help transform research communication so that science can be shared, understood and used more effectively. We'relooking for a Senior Product Manager to join our Product team for a 12-month maternity cover contract. It'san interesting time to join us.
Research publishing is changing rapidly. Researchers' expectations are changing. Technology is creating possibilities that didn't exist a few years ago. And at PLOS we'rerethinking some of the services, systems and assumptions that have shaped scholarly publishing for decades.
That means there are interesting product problems to solve - not just features to deliver.
You'lltake responsibility for a product area and work with designers, engineersand colleagues across PLOS to understand the problems that matter, work out where we can make the greatest difference and help the team learn its way towards good solutions.
Although this is a fixed-term role, itisn'ta caretaker role. You'llbe joining active product teams working on significant problems and will have plenty of opportunity to shape what we do and how we do it.
We want our product teams to be curious, evidence-ledand comfortable with uncertainty.
Wedon'texpect a Product Manager to arrive with all the answers. We do expect them to ask good questions.
You'lluse continuous discovery alongside delivery: spending time with users, looking at data, understanding the wider service, identifyingassumptionsand finding practical ways to test them.
You'llhelp the team break large problems into smaller things we can learn from, rather than waiting until everything is known before we release something.
Andyou'llmake the team's thinking visible - explaining whatwe'retrying to achieve, whatwe'velearned, whatwe'reuncertain about and whywe'remaking the choices we are.
We'dbe especially interested in candidates who have experience of one or more of the following:
Experience of scholarly publishing is useful butisn'trequired.
For us, seniorityisn'tabout having a larger backlog or knowing more product framework:it'sabout judgement.
You’ll be able to take a complex and uncertain problem, help people understand it, decide what we most need to learn, bring a team together around a sensible course of action and change that course when the evidence tells us to.
You’llbe comfortable making decisions without perfect information while being clear about the assumptions and risks involved.
Andyou'llhelp the people around you think more clearly about the product - not simply tell them what to build.
You’lljoin PLOS's Product team and work collaboratively with colleagues across Digital and the wider organisation.
The role has no direct line-management responsibility.
The job is fully remote. Some flexibility to work across time zones and occasional national or international travel may berequired.
The base salary range we’ve established for these positions is (UK) £65,000 - £75,500. PLOS also offers a comprehensive benefits package summarized below.
Building on a strong legacy of pioneering innovation, PLOS continues to be a catalyst in open science, reimagining models to meet open science principles, removing barriers and promoting inclusion in knowledge creation and sharing, and publishing research outputs that enable everyone to learn from, reuse and build upon scientific knowledge.
Our work is supported by a highly skilled global in-house team, partnerships with local scholarly organizations, and the valued contributions of a diverse, international community of scientific researchers.
We’re working to create a more equitable system of scientific knowledge and understanding. Removing barriers to inclusion and facilitating broad participation of voices is core to our success, inside and out.
Beyond accepting distinct perspectives, we seek and support divergent backgrounds among our staff because we know differences strengthen our teams, our work, and our communities. We strongly encourage applicants of all identities to join us as we work towards a future where science is open to all, for all.
