ABOUT THE ROLE
The Director of Sales (International) will own and grow Synergy Spine Solutions’ business outside the United States (OUS). This is a strategic, hands-on leadership role responsible for the performance of our existing international distributor network, the identification and onboarding of new distribution partners in priority markets, and the development of the commercial infrastructure (training, KOL engagement, pricing, market access support) needed to scale international revenue. The successful candidate will combine strategic sales leadership with the operational discipline required of an early commercial-stage medical device company, and will work closely with the Chief Commercial Officer, CEO, and cross-functional leaders in Regulatory, Clinical, and Marketing.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and execute Synergy Spine’s international (O.U.S.) sales strategy and annual operating plan, including revenue targets, market prioritization, and resource allocation.
- Own, manage, and grow the company’s existing distributor network across EMEA, APAC, and Canada (SAP), ensuring distributors meet performance, compliance, and brand standards.
- Identify, evaluate, recruit, and contract new in-country distribution partners in priority growth markets, negotiating agreements that protect margin and support long-term brand positioning.
- Build and manage the international sales forecast and pipeline, providing accurate, timely reporting to the CCO, CEO, and Board of Directors.
- Partner with Regulatory Affairs and Clinical teams to support product registrations, CE marking/other OUS regulatory pathways, and market access activities in target countries.
- Design and implement distributor and surgeon training, certification, and clinical education programs to ensure safe, effective, and consistent product adoption.
- Cultivate relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), surgeon champions, and professional societies internationally to drive clinical advocacy and case volume.
- Represent Synergy Spine Solutions at international medical congresses, trade shows, and distributor meetings.
- Monitor competitive dynamics, reimbursement environments, and pricing conditions by region, and adjust strategy accordingly.
- Ensure all international commercial activity complies with the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), local laws, and company policy.
- Collaborate with Marketing on the development of region-specific sales tools, messaging, and campaigns.
- Build and, over time, lead a lean international sales/support team as the business scales.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- 5+ years of progressive sales leadership experience in medical devices, with significant direct experience managing international/OUS markets and distributor networks.
- Demonstrated track record of building, managing, and growing distributor relationships across multiple countries or regions.
- Experience in spine, orthopedics, or related surgical implant categories.
- Proven success launching products in international markets and navigating OUS regulatory/market access processes.
- Track record of consistently meeting or exceeding international revenue targets.
- Strong commercial negotiation skills and experience structuring distribution agreements and pricing frameworks.
- Excellent cross-cultural communication and relationship-building skills.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally 60% or more.
Preferred
- Experience with cervical or lumbar motion-preservation technology (artificial disc replacement).
- Existing relationships with spine distributors and surgeon KOLs in Europe and/or Asia-Pacific.
- Prior experience in a small or emerging growth-stage medical device company scaling from limited to broad commercial infrastructure.
