Chowan University invites applications for a full-time, in-person, 9-month faculty appointment in the Department of Criminal Justice to begin in August, 2026 or January, 2027. The appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Instructor (non-tenure track), depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate Criminal Justice courses, advise students, and contribute to the academic and professional development of the department. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching, student engagement, and service within a Christ-centered academic environment.

In addition to classroom instruction, faculty members are expected to participate in academic advising, curriculum development, departmental activities, assessment initiatives, and service to the University community. Chowan University is a graduate, coeducational, residential, church-related university located on a beautiful campus in northeastern North Carolina in the historic town of Murfreesboro. The successful candidate will support the mission of Chowan University and work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to promote academic excellence and student success.

Essential Functions

• Teach undergraduate Criminal Justice courses in a face-to-face learning environment.
• Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and academic advising.
• Integrate technology and innovative instructional methods into course delivery and curriculum development.
• Maintain scheduled office hours and provide timely academic support and mentoring to students.
• Participate in curriculum assessment, program development, and departmental planning activities.
• Collaborate with faculty colleagues to enhance academic programs and student learning outcomes.
• Support student recruitment, retention, and engagement initiatives.
• Serve on university and departmental committees as assigned.
• Contribute to the overall mission and goals of Chowan University through service and professional engagement.

Work is primarily performed in classrooms, offices, and other university facilities, with frequent interaction with students, faculty, staff, prospective students, and community partners. The position requires the ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a dynamic academic environment while maintaining professionalism and effective communication.

Education and Experience

• Master’s degree in Criminal Justice or a closely related field is required.
• Ph.D. in Criminal Justice or a closely related field is preferred.
• Previous university-level teaching experience is preferred.
• Evidence of effective teaching, student engagement, and academic advising is preferred.
• Professional experience in criminal justice, law enforcement, corrections, courts, or related fields is desirable.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated success in teaching a variety of Criminal Justice courses.
• Experience using learning management systems and educational technology.
• Ability to mentor and support a diverse student population.
• Commitment to continuous professional development and scholarly engagement.
• Experience contributing to curriculum development and assessment initiatives.
