Assistant Accountant

Sewell Wallis are currently working with a fast-paced South Yorkshire retail business who are now looking for an Assistant Accountant to join their finance team in Barnsley. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, takes pride in getting the detail right and is confident managing a varied transactional finance workload.

You'll play an important role in supporting the day-to-day finance function, taking ownership of bank and payment reconciliations, purchase ledger, supplier payments and intercompany transactions, while also providing support across month-end processes and financial reporting.

What will you be doing?
You'll be providing day-to-day support across a broad range of finance activities, including:

• Performing daily reconciliations of company bank accounts in both GBP and USD.
• Posting bank transactions, including monies received and payments made, and providing daily bank updates to relevant departments.
• Processing supplier invoices and credit notes, matching invoices to purchase orders and goods received, and maintaining an accurate purchase ledger.
• Obtaining and reconciling monthly supplier statements, investigating disputed invoices and liaising with suppliers to resolve queries.
• Reviewing and monitoring purchase orders and setting up new supplier accounts, ensuring bank details are verified in line with company procedures.
• Reviewing credit card expenditure and ensuring expenses are correctly coded and supported by the appropriate documentation.
• Supporting month-end processes, including accruals, prepayments, fixed asset accounting and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Assisting with financial analysis, reporting and the preparation of management accounts as your experience develops.
• Gaining exposure to audit and VAT-related processes while continuing to develop your technical accounting knowledge.

What skills are we looking for?

• Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including the confident use of SUMIFS and XLOOKUP and/or VLOOKUP. This is essential for the role.
• Previous experience reconciling bank accounts and payment platforms.
• A good understanding of purchase ledger processes, supplier invoices and payment runs.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining accurate financial records.
• The ability to investigate discrepancies, identify the cause of issues and resolve them efficiently.
• Good organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise competing deadlines.
• Confidence communicating with suppliers, customers and internal departments to resolve queries.
• The ability to work accurately in a fast-paced environment with high transaction volumes.
• A proactive approach to problem-solving, with the confidence to take ownership of tasks and follow them through.
• Good IT skills and the ability to learn new accounting systems and processes.
• A flexible attitude and the willingness to provide support across different areas of the finance function.
