Underwriter, P&C Middle Market

Overview

In this role you will assess and price Middle Market Property & Liability risks to drive profitable growth within Sompo’s multi-line, broker-driven platform. You will partner with retail producers, set terms within underwriting guidelines, and expand the book through strong client relationships. You’ll balance risk and profitability with governance and compliance, while supporting cross-functional collaboration across the team. This is an opportunity to shape a high-impact underwriting practice at a global insurer from the London office.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate new and renewal submissions to identify high-opportunity accounts aligned with profit objectives
• Price and structure coverage, terms, and exposures for individual risks
• Set terms per underwriting strategy and quote qualified risks
• Attend client/broker meetings and represent underwriting professionally
• Maintain profitability through disciplined pricing and adherence to guidelines
• Expand portfolio by nurturing existing relationships and pursuing new prospects
• Conduct underwriting audits and escalate risk where needed
• Submit referrals for higher-level approval when outside authority

Key requirements

• P&C underwriting experience in the middle market (5+ years)
• Strong negotiation skills
• Established relationships with retail producers
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Underwriting experience; other lines of business viewed positively
• Undergraduate degree or higher preferred (insurance focus)
