Overview
As a Simulation Data Scientist at Tesco, you will develop and connect simulation models to understand and improve operations across the business, from supplier to shelf. You will contribute to distributed simulations and select appropriate model fidelity to fit business questions, data, and compute constraints. Your work will validate models with operational data, run scenario experiments, and inform decisions, while embracing agile practices and reliable software delivery.
Pay / Benefits
Annual bonus up to 20%
25 days holiday + personal day
Private medical insurance
26 weeks maternity/adoption leave
6 weeks paid paternity leave
24/7 virtual GP and Employee Assistance Programme
Responsibilities
Understand operational problems with colleagues and define what the simulation must represent, test and measure
Build and maintain simulation models using Python and related tools, leveraging simulation and data science skills
Create models at varying levels of detail and guide approach based on accuracy, data, and computing constraints
Connect models to enable joint execution across distributed or federated environments and ensure data exchange
Develop awareness of interoperability standards for connecting simulations and apply with guidance
Prepare and analyse operational data to set up models and represent real-world variation
Validate models by comparing results with real-world data and feedback from experts
Run repeatable experiments to assess operational changes (e.g., supply chain scenarios) and compare effects on capacity, cost, service, and resources
Explain findings, including assumptions, uncertainty, and limitations of models
Work in an agile team to plan and deliver in manageable steps, provide feedback, and raise issues early
Write clear, maintainable code and contribute to code reviews, version control, automated testing, and reliable releases
Take responsibility for agreed tasks, seek support when needed, and develop technical skills
Key requirements
Python programming with clear, structured, testable code
Simulation modelling and representing real-world processes at different levels of detail
Data analysis and basic statistics to prepare inputs and interpret results
Understanding of data exchange between models or software components
Familiarity with version control (Git) and automated testing/software delivery practices
Ability to explain technical work clearly and collaborate
Organised problem solving and agile delivery
Building/adapting simulation models and using object-oriented programming and data science methods
Working with data to develop, test or evaluate models and communicate findings
