Consultant General Surgeon with interest in Upper GI

Overview

In this role you will join a forward-thinking surgical team as a Consultant, delivering high-quality general surgery with a focus on Upper GI and laparoscopic techniques across dual sites in a rural Trust. You will provide clinical leadership, supervise junior staff, and contribute to service development and teaching within a JAG-endoscopy capable environment. The post offers a balanced mix of elective and emergency work, with opportunities to impact patient pathways and MDT collaboration. This is a patient-centred role in West Wales, promoting innovation and professional development.

Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality general surgical care with emphasis on Upper GI and laparoscopic procedures
• Participate in the on-call emergency general surgery rota (1:8)
• Perform elective procedures at Withybush General Hospital, including endoscopy services
• Provide clinical leadership and supervision to junior medical staff
• Contribute to multidisciplinary team discussions, service development and innovation
• Support delivery of RTT and Standard Cancer Pathway targets
• Engage in teaching, training and supervision of learners
• Participate in clinical audit, governance, and quality improvement
• Collaborate with primary care and community teams to improve patient pathways
• Maintain continuing professional development and revalidation requirements

Key requirements

• GMC registration (Full)
• On the GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of CCT
• Valid Advanced Life Support
• Sub-specialty training appropriate for UK consultant sub-specialist practice
• Broad specialist experience and leadership capabilities
• Desirable UK/NHS experience
