Head of Architecture

Overview

In this role you will shape Rightmove’s technology strategy to support the mission of enabling people to make their move. You will lead a diverse, containerised, event-driven architecture across in-house and third-party systems, guiding the AI-enabled evolution of our software. You’ll work with data and product leaders to align architecture with business goals and drive scalable, high-impact outcomes. This position offers visibility across 40+ teams and the chance to influence a market-leading platform used by millions.

Responsibilities

• Set and communicate a company-wide architecture strategy aligned with business goals
• Enable 40+ engineering teams to make efficient architectural decisions
• Lead and develop a seven-strong architecture team
• Coordinate data platform architecture with wider platform strategy
• Oversee integration of in-house and third-party systems into a cohesive ecosystem
• Align architecture decisions with business objectives to optimise TCO
• Partner with technology and product leaders to drive value from architectural choices

Key requirements

• Experience leading architecture at scale (impactful leadership regardless of team size)
• Strong grasp of modern distributed architectures, containerisation, event-driven systems, and trade-offs of availability vs consistency
• Ability to set architectural direction in a high-traffic, AI-enabled environment
• Experience managing and developing an architecture or engineering team
• Excellent cross-functional communication across engineering, product, and senior leadership
• Track record of building inclusive, collaborative engineering cultures through mentoring and influence
