Senior Underwriter - Downstream Energy

Overview

In this role you support the Regional Product Leader in managing underwriting operations for UK & Ireland, focusing on profitability, pricing, and broker/client management across Downstream Energy. You will lead a team of underwriters, build broker relationships, and drive cross-sell opportunities while maintaining regulatory and brand objectives. Travel and community visibility are essential to reinforce AXA XL’s presence. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to align on strategy and growth.

Responsibilities

• Execute departmental strategy and profitability targets, including risk premium accuracy
• Lead and develop a team of underwriters
• Oversee submissions, policy wording, inspection reports, loss runs, and financials
• Transfer underwriting knowledge and controls to the team
• Foster client and broker relationships to enable cross-selling and retention
• Maintain market visibility through targeted marketing to insureds and brokers
• Ensure timely implementation of new/renewed accounts per quality standards
• Coordinate with internal teams to determine appropriate reinsurance and handle endorsements

Key requirements

• Technical underwriting experience across all Downstream Energy products
• Experience in policy development and broker management
• Hands-on team leadership with increasing responsibilities
• Knowledge of systems functionality and Microsoft Office usage
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills
• Ability to adapt to changing environment with flexibility and innovation
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, networking, and presentation skills
• Ability to build and maintain relationships with customers, producers, and brokers
