Commercial Director

Overview

In this role you will lead the commercial function for a leading civil engineering and infrastructure contractor. You will partner with the senior leadership team to ensure financial performance, governance, and commercial excellence across projects from tender to final account. You will own strategic commercial decisions, cashflow, pipeline forecasting, and reporting, while maintaining strong client relationships. This is a high-impact, hands-on leadership role that shapes project outcomes and business growth. You will operate across multiple sites, balancing office and field presence and contributing to a prestigious portfolio.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the entire commercial function
• Oversee projects from tender stage through final account and post-completion
• Manage all procurement and buying activities
• Drive commercial strategy and business performance
• Full P&L responsibility
• Produce and manage cashflow and pipeline forecasts
• Oversee management accounts and commercial reporting
• Ensure robust commercial governance and risk management
• Support business growth and maintain strong client relationships

Key requirements

• Significant experience in groundworks, civil engineering and infrastructure contracting
• Strong background in senior commercial leadership roles
• Extensive experience managing the full commercial lifecycle of major projects
• Strong working knowledge of NEC forms of contract
• Experience within self-delivery contractor, Tier 1 contractor, or ideally both
• Exceptional commercial acumen with profitability, forecasting and financial control responsibility
• Leadership skills to build, mentor and develop high-performing commercial teams
