Senior Estimator – HS2 Station Build

Overview

In this Senior Estimator role, you’ll lead the tendering of large civil and rail packages for a major contractor on the HS2 station project. You’ll work within a pre-construction team to prepare analytical estimates, preliminaries, and cash flows, and present bids for various contracts. The role focuses on delivering competitive, risk-aware proposals that align with project goals and timely submission timelines. You will shape value-driven solutions and support the bid team to secure successful outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Prepare analytical estimates and preliminaries in collaboration with the Tender Planner
• Price and source quantities from drawings and specifications
• Present estimates in bid team meetings and finalize bid settlements
• Work under strict deadlines and manage bid submission timelines
• Price work under contracts such as NEC, Target Cost, Design & Build, and ECI
• Prepare abstracts of materials and sub-contract requirements
• Conduct commercial appraisal of materials and subcontractor quotations
• Develop value-engineered solutions and assess their cost effects
• Generate cash flow forecasts and capital expenditure projections
• Manage and coordinate work of Estimating Team to meet deadlines
• Attend site visits during tender periods
• Utilise estimating software to prepare estimates
• Evaluate construction methods and propose alternatives with the bid team
• Assist in submission document preparation
• Identify and price bid risks throughout the process
• Promote alternative solutions and risk-aware pricing
• Prepare forecasts of associated costs and income
• Maintain awareness of contract types and commercial considerations
• Ensure proper documentation and authorisation prior to client disclosure
• Coordinate with bid team and Tender Planner on all estimating activities

Key requirements

• Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline
• Experience in Estimating or Senior Estimating roles
• Experience with main contracting in Civil and Rail infrastructure
• Knowledge of various contract forms (Traditional NEC, Target Cost, D&B, Specification & Drawing, ECI)
• Experience pricing medium to large civil works
• Commercial awareness and ability to develop win strategies
• Ability to promote alternative solutions and value engineering
• Knowledge of CCS Candy Estimating system advantageous
• Full driving licence
• Commercially aware with a lateral thinking approach
