Principal / Senior Principal Hydrogeologist – Minerals & Resources | Energy

Overview

In this senior role, you lead technically rigorous hydrogeological work and client relationships within Stantec’s Energy and Resources Group. You’ll drive complex groundwater assessments, modelling, and permitting for quarrying, mining, and regulated projects, shaping outcomes and risk strategies. You’ll mentor colleagues and help steer the growth of our quarrying and mining hydrogeology service line. This is a client-facing, impact-driven position with cross-office collaboration and regulator engagement at its core.

Responsibilities

• Lead complex hydrogeological assessments, conceptual and numerical groundwater modelling, and aquifer test design/interpretation.
• Manage groundwater monitoring programmes and prepare high-quality technical deliverables.
• Lead groundwater abstraction and discharge permitting from strategy through regulator engagement.
• Foster strong client relationships, identify opportunities for additional support, and contribute to proposals and bids.
• Mentor and develop junior/mid-level staff to support team growth and capability.
• Communicate findings clearly to clients, regulators, and project stakeholders.

Key requirements

• Degree in Hydrogeology, Geology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Water Resources or related discipline
• Significant experience in hydrogeology, groundwater assessment, water resources, quarrying/mining, environmental permitting or consultancy
• Strong technical judgement with ability to lead client relationships and business development
• Experience in leading groundwater permitting, robust modelling, data review, and high-standard deliverables
• Willingness to travel and hold a full clean UK driving licence
• Groundwater modelling experience with packages such as MODFLOW, FEFLOW, Visual MODFLOW, Groundwater Vistas or equivalent
