Payroll Manager

Robert Half are working with a Wiltshire based organisation to recruit a Payroll Manager on a 6 months FTC basis.

Office based, with some flexibility.

Payroll Manager to take ownership of the end-to-end payroll operation and act as the in-house expert for pension administration.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who combines strong technical payroll knowledge with a passion for process improvement, compliance and stakeholder support.

Key Responsibilities

Payroll

• Manage the full monthly payroll cycle across multiple employee groups.
• Process starters, leavers, contractual changes, overtime, allowances and statutory payments.
• Ensure accurate and timely HMRC submissions, PAYE, National Insurance and statutory deductions.
• Reconcile payroll reports and control accounts, resolving discrepancies where required.
• Produce payroll journals and support monthly financial reporting.
• Maintain robust payroll controls, ensuring audit readiness and GDPR compliance.
• Support annual audits and year-end payroll activities.

Pensions

• Lead the administration of all pension schemes.
• Ensure accurate pension contributions, returns and statutory submissions.
• Manage auto-enrolment and re-enrolment processes.
• Act as the organisation's subject matter expert on pensions legislation and TPS compliance.
• Support employees with pension-related queries and guidance.

Continuous Improvement

• Review and enhance payroll processes, improving efficiency and reducing manual administration.
• Support payroll, HR and finance system upgrades and developments.
• Work closely with HR, Finance and IT teams to improve system integration and data accuracy.
• Develop effective controls, workflows and governance procedures.

Stakeholder Management

• Serve as the primary contact for payroll and pensions queries.
• Build strong relationships across HR, Finance and wider business functions.
• Provide clear and professional communication to stakeholders at all levels.

Key requirements:

• Proven experience managing end-to-end payroll.
• Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, HMRC regulations and compliance requirements.
• Experience administering pension schemes.
• Excellent reconciliation, reporting and problem-solving skills.
• Strong systems knowledge and experience improving payroll processes.
• Confident working with senior stakeholders and handling confidential information.
• High levels of accuracy, organisation and attention to detail.
