Most technical directors stop engineering. This role refuses to.
London
Most technical directors spend their week in governance meetings about engineering instead of doing any.
99.999 per cent availability is the easy part of mission critical work. The hard part is being the person everyone looks at when the design question has no precedent. That is the job. This is a technical director seat in the mission critical team of a global engineering consultancy, working across hyperscale, colocation, enterprise and end user clients in the UK and internationally. The team is established, the pipeline is committed, and the sector keeps producing problems that have never been solved before, which is exactly why it needs a stronger technical bench. You act as the electrical authority on the most complex schemes: setting the technical direction, reviewing the work that matters, standing in front of clients when the stakes are highest, and building the engineers underneath you into the people who will eventually take your job. The platform gives you scale, reach and the kind of project list that does not exist at smaller practices. The team around you is genuinely strong, which matters at this level more than anywhere else. Technical directors fail when they are the only adult in the room. Here you inherit capable seniors, an established review culture and a leadership group that understands the difference between technical authority and seniority theatre. If you are already operating at this level but your current firm treats technical leadership as a stepping stone to management rather than a destination, this role takes the opposite view. Salary is between £100,000 and £140,000.A quiet conversation first suits most people at this level. Get in touch and we will keep it that way.If you've read this far and you're still unsure and would prefer a detailed market insight including salary bands and market trends - then check out our free guide here:
