Cardiff

Hoare Lea is a human-centric and planet-conscious engineering consultancy. We offer intelligent and sustainable solutions to complex design challenges for the built environment throughout the UK and further afield.

We provide a wide range of engineering and consultancy services, including acoustics, air quality, building services (MEP), fire, lighting, security and sustainability to name but a few. Together, our highly skilled teams use technical expertise and problem-solving skills to bring buildings to life. We ensure that whatever the building, its design is outstanding, and its operations meet the needs of the communities it serves.

Whatever your ambitions or circumstances, our aim is to enable everyone to develop their knowledge, give their best, and enjoy what they do.

We have an exciting opportunity for a BIM Technician to join our Cardiff team. This role would suit someone with some existing experience using Autodesk Revit who is looking to develop their career within BIM and building services engineering. You may already be working in a junior BIM, CAD or digital engineering role, have completed an apprenticeship or relevant qualification, or be looking to transition into building services from another area of the construction industry.

The Role

Being part of one of the UK’s largest building engineering consultancies, we benefit from collaborating with some of the best engineers in the business, with access to state-of-the-art technical support, and have the opportunity to work on some of the largest and most high-profile projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

SIDRA Medical and Research Centre in Doha, UAE, the Living Systems Institute at the University of Exeter, the vast £1 billion regeneration at Kings Cross in London, are examples of some of the amazing projects where we have led the design with other Hoare Lea disciplines.

As a BIM Technician

At Hoare Lea, BIM isn’t just about modelling; it’s a driver of innovation, collaboration, and smarter decision-making. Our BIM community sits at the heart of our digital strategy, shaping how we use information to design buildings that perform beautifully and sustainably.

You’ll be part of a supportive, dynamic environment where creativity and precision come together, and where your ideas can make a real difference.

You’ll work on a diverse range of projects across sectors such as Healthcare, Education, Residential, and Commercial, supported by both your local engineering team and our national BIM & Digital Engineering community.

As a BIM Technician, your day-to-day tasks will vary, as we’ll expose you to all aspects of our work so you can discover what suits you. You could be;

• Support the production and coordination of mechanical, electrical and public health (MEP) 3D models and 2D engineering drawings using Autodesk Revit.
• Assist with model setup and management, including views, sheets, schedules, legends, tagging, annotations and model information.
• Support multidisciplinary model coordination, including reviewing linked architectural, structural and MEP models and assisting with clash detection and coordination reviews using Revit and Navisworks.
• Work within Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) and project Common Data Environment (CDE) workflows, while learning to read and apply BIM Execution Plans (BEPs), project information requirements and relevant standards.
• Work closely with engineers and other BIM team members to translate engineering designs and mark‑ups into coordinated BIM models and drawings, and attend project/BIM coordination meetings as required.
• Carry out basic model and drawing quality checks to help ensure outputs comply with project BIM requirements and Hoare Lea standards, while developing an interest in automation tools such as Dynamo and RF Tools.
• Engage in community events, DE&I initiatives, and knowledge‑sharing within the team.
• Where appropriate, gain experience through project meetings and site visits to understand how coordinated BIM information supports construction and installation.

About You

You will have some practical experience using Autodesk Revit and an interest in developing your career within BIM and building services engineering. Ideally, you will have had some exposure to mechanical, electrical or public health (MEP) services through previous employment, an apprenticeship, college/university studies or relevant project experience. You will be self‑motivated, eager to learn, highly organised and detail-focused, with a methodical approach to your work.

To Be Successful In This Role, You’ll Need

• Some practical experience using Autodesk Revit, preferably within a building services, MEP or construction environment.
• A basic understanding of building services and how mechanical, electrical and public health systems are coordinated within buildings.
• An understanding of producing 2D drawings and information from a 3D Revit model, with strong attention to detail and a methodical approach.
• Good communication and collaboration skills, with an eagerness to learn, develop and contribute to BIM and digital delivery processes.
• An interest in BIM coordination, clash detection, multidisciplinary model coordination, automation and ongoing professional development.

Our Benefits

• To reward your hard work and commitment we offer both core and flexible benefits, a competitive salary and industry leading training and development to support you throughout your career.
• You’ll have the opportunity to participate in our 9-day fortnight scheme, thriving community groups, varied social and networking events, and extensive professional and technical development schemes.
• We also offer an extensive benefits package, including private medical cover, electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme, stock options, and up to 30 days of annual leave.

Adjustments and accommodations

If there are adjustments or accommodations that we can put in place to ensure you can participate and give your best at any stage of the recruitment process (whether relating to disability, neurodivergence, or anything else) please let us know.

We are committed to enabling a healthy work-life balance for all employees. So, we welcome applications from candidates seeking flexible working arrangements to suit their particular needs and lifestyle, including part-time, term-time-only, and remote working.
