Health, Safety & Environmental Officer

We are supporting a well-established precision engineering business operating within a busy manufacturing environment. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Health, Safety & Environmental Officer to join their team at their Greater Manchester facility.

Purpose of the role

Ensure the business maintains high standards of health, safety and environmental compliance, while promoting a safe and positive working environment across the site. This is a practical, hands-on role within a metallic manufacturing environment, working closely with employees, management, facilities and the divisional H&S Manager.

Typical responsibilities

• Create and maintain safe working areas and challenge unsafe practices
• Complete and review risk assessments, safe systems of work and operational controls
• Conduct weekly H&S audits and manage corrective actions
• Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and corrective actions
• Provide practical H&S and environmental training and advice to employees and managers
• Support emergency arrangements, including fire safety, spill response, first aid and evacuation drills
• Promote positive safety reporting and employee consultation
• Manage hazardous substance inventories and safety data sheets
• Lead the annual ISO 14001 audit process, including preparation and follow-up actions
• Support environmental permits, waste management and environmental compliance
• Monitor waste segregation, storage, transfer and disposal
• Maintain relevant environmental and H&S records
• Work closely with site facilities and the divisional H&S Manager

Ideal candidate

• Minimum 3 years’ HSE experience
• Previous experience within a metallic manufacturing environment , ideally sheet metal, machining or precision engineering
• NEBOSH or IOSH certification
• Working knowledge of UK health, safety and environmental legislation
• Experience with risk assessments, SSOW and H&S auditing
• Accident / incident investigation and root cause analysis experience
• ISO 14001 and environmental compliance experience
• Hazardous substances / COSHH and SDS experience
• Practical, pragmatic and solution-focused approach
• Strong communication skills and ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
