Location: Stockport
Role: SEMH Youth Worker
Setting: Specialist SEN Primary School
Start Date: ASAP / October Half Term
Hours: Full-time Term-time
Contract: Long-term opportunity
Make a difference where it matters most.
Are you an experienced Youth Worker, SEMH Support Worker, Behaviour Mentor or Teaching Assistant who is passionate about helping children overcome barriers and reach their potential?
Do you have the patience, resilience and empathy to support children who may struggle with emotional regulation, behaviour, social interaction and engagement with education?
We are currently recruiting for an enthusiastic and committed SEMH Youth Worker to join a specialist SEN primary school in Stockport.
This is an incredibly rewarding opportunity to work with children who require additional support to feel safe, build trusting relationships and engage positively with their education.
The Role
As an SEMH Youth Worker, you will play a key role in supporting pupils' social, emotional and mental health , helping them to develop the skills and confidence they need both inside and outside the classroom.
You will work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and the wider SEN team to provide consistent, nurturing and structured support.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEMH and additional needs.
- Building positive, trusting relationships with children.
- Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and self-management.
- Helping children understand and manage their emotions and behaviour.
- Supporting pupils during periods of dysregulation or heightened emotions.
- Using positive behaviour strategies and appropriate de-escalation techniques.
- Encouraging positive communication, social skills and peer relationships.
- Supporting pupils to engage with learning and the wider school environment.
- Helping children develop confidence, resilience and independence.
- Providing a calm, consistent and supportive presence throughout the school day.
- Working collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral staff and external professionals.
- Following individual support plans and contributing to pupils' development and progress.
About You
The successful candidate will be someone who is calm, compassionate, consistent and resilient.
You will understand that behaviour is often a form of communication and be able to look beyond the behaviour to understand the individual needs of the child.
We would particularly welcome applications from candidates with experience as:
- Youth Workers
- SEMH Support Workers
- Behaviour Mentors
- SEN Teaching Assistants
- Learning Support Assistants
- Pastoral Support Workers
- Family Support Workers
- Residential Support Workers
- Children's Support Workers
Experience supporting children with SEMH, autism, challenging behaviour, trauma, social difficulties or additional educational needs would be highly desirable.
You will need to be confident setting appropriate boundaries while maintaining a warm, positive and nurturing approach.
Why This Role?
This isn't simply a classroom support position.
You will have the opportunity to become a trusted adult and positive role model for children who may have experienced challenges within education.
Sometimes success might look like a child entering the classroom calmly, communicating how they feel, managing a difficult situation or simply having a positive day at school.
Those moments matter.
Your consistency, patience and ability to build meaningful relationships could have a lasting impact on a child's confidence, wellbeing and future.
You'll be joining a specialist school environment where pupils are supported as individuals and staff work together to create a safe, structured and nurturing setting.
An enhanced DBS on the update service is a required document.
