Yard Operative

Yard Operative – Chandlers Building Supplies

Location: Lewes
Company: Chandlers Building Supplies, part of IBMG
Contract: Full-time, Permanent

Join the team at Chandlers Building Supplies

Established in 1993, Chandlers Building Supplies is a trusted name across the Southeast, combining local expertise with a strong commitment to excellent customer service.

As part of Independent Builders’ Merchants Group (IBMG), we’re proud to offer the best of both worlds – the friendly, personal service of a local business, backed by the strength and opportunities of a wider group.

We’re now looking for a Yard Operative to join our friendly team in Lewes.

About the role

This is a hands-on role where you’ll play an important part in keeping our yard running safely, efficiently and professionally.

You’ll work as part of the branch team, helping to prepare customer orders, move and load materials and provide a friendly, helpful service to customers collecting their goods.

Every day will be different, and you’ll have the opportunity to build your product knowledge, develop new skills and become an important part of the branch team.

What you’ll be doing

• Loading and unloading building materials and timber
• Picking, checking and preparing customer orders
• Helping customers with collections from the yard
• Keeping the yard clean, organised and safe
• Operating forklift trucks, where trained and authorised
• Supporting the wider branch team when required
• Following all health and safety procedures and working safely at all times
• Providing a friendly and helpful experience for every customer

What we’re looking for

You don’t necessarily need previous builders’ merchant experience – what matters most is your attitude and willingness to learn.

We’re looking for someone who:

• Enjoys working as part of a team
• Is reliable, organised and takes pride in their work
• Has good communication and customer service skills
• Is comfortable working outdoors and handling building materials
• Has a forklift licence, or is willing to undertake training
• Has previous yard, warehouse or builders’ merchant experience – desirable but not essential
• Has an interest in building materials or product knowledge – a bonus

Working hours

Monday to Friday: 7:30am – 5:00pm
Every other Saturday: 8:00am – 12:00pm

What you’ll get

We want our people to feel valued, supported and able to develop their careers with us. As part of the Chandlers and IBMG team, you’ll receive:

• Generous holiday entitlement
• Training and career development opportunities
• Staff discount on building materials
• Employee Assistance Programme
• Retail discounts through Perks Membership
• Branded uniform provided
• A friendly and supportive team environment

Ready to join us?

If you’re dependable, positive and enjoy a role where you can be active, work with people and see the results of your work every day, we’d love to hear from you.

Join Chandlers Building Supplies and become part of a team that’s committed to great service, great products and doing things the right way.
