The Opportunity

We are working with an established St. James’s Place Partner Practice in Hartley Wintney that is looking to add a Trainee Paraplanner to its growing Paraplanning team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or someone looking to start a career in financial services and develop into a professional Paraplanner.

The practice is particularly interested in candidates who are new to financial services or early in their career, as they are able to provide comprehensive training and develop the successful candidate from the ground up.

Previous experience as a Paraplanner or Administrator within another IFA or financial advice business is not essential. In fact, candidates without established processes from other firms may be particularly well suited to the role, as they can be trained directly in the practice's systems and the St. James’s Place approach.

Key Responsibilities

As a Trainee Paraplanner, you will work closely with Financial Advisers and the wider Paraplanning team to support the delivery of high-quality financial advice.

Your responsibilities will develop as your knowledge and experience grows and may include:

  • Assisting with the preparation of financial advice documentation.
  • Supporting Financial Advisers with research and technical administration.
  • Preparing and maintaining client information and records.
  • Assisting with suitability reports and recommendations.
  • Carrying out research into financial products and investments.
  • Supporting cashflow modelling and financial planning analysis.
  • Assisting with pension and investment-related research.
  • Preparing information and documentation for adviser meetings.
  • Liaising with providers and other relevant parties.
  • Ensuring client files and documentation are accurate and maintained to a high standard.
  • Learning and following the practice's established processes and the St. James’s Place way of working.
  • Progressively taking on more technical Paraplanning responsibilities as your knowledge develops.

About You

The ideal candidate will be someone who is genuinely interested in building a career within financial planning.

You do not need previous Paraplanning experience. The practice is particularly open to:

  • Recent graduates.
  • Candidates with a degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Mathematics or a related subject.
  • Individuals looking to begin a career in financial services.
  • Candidates with strong academic backgrounds and an interest in investments and financial planning.
  • Individuals who have completed or are working towards relevant financial services qualifications.
  • Candidates with strong administration, analytical and written communication skills.

Previous experience within an IFA, financial advice firm or another tied adviser is not required.

Skills & Attributes

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good numerical and analytical ability.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • The ability to work accurately to deadlines.
  • A willingness to learn and develop technical knowledge.
  • A genuine interest in financial planning and investments.
  • The ability to follow established processes and procedures.
  • A professional and client-focused approach.
  • Good IT skills and confidence learning new systems.
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to take responsibility.

Location & Working Arrangements

The practice is based in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire.

The Paraplanning team operates on a hybrid working basis, although the successful candidate will be expected to work fully from the office for their first six months while they receive training and become familiar with the firm's processes and systems.

Following the initial training period, hybrid working will be available.

Career Development

This role is designed as a genuine entry point into a career in Paraplanning and financial planning.

You will receive structured training and practical experience, with the opportunity to progressively develop your technical knowledge and responsibilities within an established financial planning environment.

For the right graduate or early-career candidate, this represents an opportunity to build a long-term career in Paraplanning rather than simply taking on an administrative position.

Who Would Suit This Role?

This position would particularly suit someone who:

  • Has recently graduated and wants to enter financial services.
  • Has a genuine interest in investments and financial planning.
  • Wants to become a Paraplanner but does not yet have the required experience.
  • Is academically strong and comfortable working with detailed information.
  • Wants to learn from experienced Financial Advisers and Paraplanners.
  • Is comfortable committing to a fully office-based training period before moving to hybrid working.

Previous Paraplanning experience is not required.
