Salary: From 30,000 per annum

Contract: Permanent, Full-Time

The Opportunity

Are you an experienced plumber or trade specialist looking to step off the tools and use your industry knowledge to build better futures? Do you want to play a key role in reducing reoffending by equipping adult learners in custody with practical trade skills, safety awareness, and recognised qualifications for the building services sector?

We are recruiting for a practical, dedicated Plumbing Tutor to join the vocational education team on-site at HMP Wayland. In this hands-on role, you will deliver plumbing qualifications up to Level 2 to small groups of prison-based learners, developing their technical competence, pipework skills, and workplace discipline to help them secure meaningful employment upon release.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Vocational Instruction: Plan and deliver engaging, high-quality plumbing training up to Level 2, blending practical workshop activities with essential trade theory.
  • Individual Training Plans: Ensure tailored training plans are established for every learner, offering ongoing advice, guidance, and constructive feedback throughout their qualification.
  • Workplace Standards & Safety: Instill strict industry standards‑in‑cluding health & safety, water regulations, tool control, and workshop cleanliness‑within a secure learning environment.
  • Progress Tracking: Assess learner practical work, track achievements accurately, and maintain detailed course documentation in line with awarding body expectations.
  • Rehabilitation Focus: Build learner confidence, work-readiness, and motivation, aligning training directly with post‑release employment opportunities in plumbing and building maintenance.

What We Are Looking For

  • Trade Qualifications: Essential Level 2 (or higher) vocational qualification in Plumbing or Domestic Heating.
  • Vocational Expertise: Substantial hands‑on industry experience as an expert in plumbing, domestic pipework, or mechanical building services.
  • Training Experience: Proven experience delivering vocational or on‑the‑job trade training, with the ability to use varied teaching methods to engage diverse learners.
  • Teaching Qualifications: A teaching or assessing qualification is desirable. No teaching qualification? No problem! Full support and funding will be provided to help you achieve the required qualifications during your probationary period.
