Allsorts Gloucestershire is a charity that provides accessible everyday experiences for disabled children, young people aged 0–25, and their families. Through a wide range of inclusive activities, we support children and young people to develop confidence, build friendships, learn new skills, and have fun in a safe and welcoming environment.

Our Swimming Programme is a thriving part of our offer, providing high-quality swimming lessons for disabled children and young people. Sessions take place in the warm-water pool at National Star College in Cheltenham on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Having exclusive use of the pool enables us to create a supportive and inclusive environment where every swimmer can progress at their own pace.

Job purpose

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed Level 2 Swimming Teachers to join our team and help deliver accessible, meaningful, and enjoyable swimming lessons for our members.

Working as part of our experienced swimming team, you will support disabled children and young people to develop water confidence, learn vital water safety skills, and achieve their individual swimming goals. Lessons are tailored to meet the needs of each swimmer and are delivered in a positive, inclusive, and person-centred way.

Our programme follows a bespoke swimming pathway informed by nationally recognised frameworks, including Swim England and the Swimming Teachers’ Association (STA) programmes, adapted to meet the needs of children and young people with additional needs and disabilities.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver safe, engaging, and inclusive swimming lessons for disabled children and young people.
  • Deliver one-to-one and small-group lessons in line with each swimmer’s individual needs, abilities, and goals.
  • Follow the Allsorts swimming pathway and record swimmer progress where required.
  • Create a positive, supportive, and encouraging learning environment that promotes confidence and enjoyment in the water.
  • Adapt teaching methods and communication styles to meet a wide range of physical, sensory, learning, and communication needs.
  • Work collaboratively with parents, carers, volunteers, and colleagues.
  • Maintain high standards of health, safety, and safeguarding at all times.
  • Attend relevant training and development opportunities as required.
  • Uphold and promote the values, policies, and procedures of Allsorts Gloucestershire.

Session structure

  • Lessons are delivered on a one-to-one or small-group basis.
  • Each lesson lasts 30 minutes.
  • Teachers will work across a two-and-a-half-hour session per agreed shift.
  • Up to five lessons may be delivered during each session.

Person specification

  • Level 2 Swimming Teacher qualification (or equivalent recognised qualification).
  • A willingness to learn new skills and approaches to support children and young people with additional needs and disabilities.
  • A positive attitude towards disability, inclusion, and enabling every child to achieve their potential in and around the water.
  • Understanding of the principles of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Reliable, professional, and able to work as part of a team.
  • Car driver with access to personal transport for travel purposes.
  • Previous experience supporting children or young people with additional needs in any setting.
  • Previous experience teaching or supporting children or adults with additional needs within a swimming environment.
  • Knowledge of adaptive or inclusive swimming practices.
  • Experience of safeguarding children and/or vulnerable adults.
  • Experience working with families, carers, or multidisciplinary teams.

Safeguarding

Allsorts Gloucestershire is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults. All staff and volunteers are expected to share this commitment.

This post is subject to a Basic DBS check and satisfactory references, in line with the Allsorts Safer Recruitment Policy.
