The Company

Our client is an established mechanical building services contractor delivering a varied portfolio of projects across London and the surrounding areas.

Their work covers a broad range of mechanical services including HVAC, air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, cooling, ventilation, plumbing and associated building services installations, with projects typically ranging from around £250k through to £5m in value .

The business has a strong pipeline of work and is continuing to grow its London delivery team. They are now looking for an experienced Mechanical Project Manager, or potentially a Senior Mechanical Project Manager, who can take genuine ownership of projects and manage them from initial handover through to completion.

This is a hands-on project management role. They want someone who enjoys being involved in the detail, understands what is happening on site and is comfortable driving the whole delivery process rather than managing projects from a distance.

The Role

You will take responsibility for the successful delivery of mechanical building services projects across London.

Depending on your experience, this could mean managing a number of smaller projects in the £250k-£1m range , one or two projects around £2m-£4m , or taking responsibility for a larger mechanical package approaching £5m .

The important thing is that you are comfortable taking ownership, managing the process and making sure the project gets delivered properly.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Taking ownership of mechanical projects from handover through to completion
• Reviewing drawings, specifications and project requirements
• Planning and programming works
• Coordinating design information and resolving technical issues
• Supporting and contributing to HVAC&R system design and design development
• Managing procurement, materials, plant and subcontractors
• Managing site teams and supervisors
• Monitoring progress against programme and managing competing priorities
• Managing project costs, variations and commercial performance
• Attending and leading client and project meetings
• Working closely with consultants, main contractors and the wider project team
• Identifying technical, programme and commercial risks early
• Developing practical solutions to project and site issues
• Managing quality, testing and commissioning
• Maintaining strong health, safety and environmental standards
• Driving projects through completion, handover and close-out
• Maintaining clear project records, programmes, reports and documentation

The projects will involve a mixture of HVAC&R and wider mechanical building services systems, so a good practical understanding of mechanical installations and how projects actually come together on site is important.

Why This Role Exists

The business has a strong orderbook and a number of projects either starting or moving through the pre-construction and delivery stages across London.

They are looking to strengthen the team with someone who can take responsibility for their own projects and become a key part of the London operation.

This isn't necessarily about finding someone who has already managed £5m projects throughout their career.

Someone who has successfully delivered projects in the £500k, £1m, £2m or £3m range and is ready to take on larger schemes could be equally interesting.

What matters more is that you understand project delivery, are commercially aware, technically credible, organised and prepared to get involved when required.

It could particularly suit someone currently working within a larger contractor who wants more ownership and visibility, or a strong Mechanical Project Manager who feels ready to step towards Senior Project Manager level.

What You'll Need

You will need proven experience in mechanical building services and ideally HVAC&R project management , with the ability to take responsibility for the day-to-day management of your schemes.

You should be able to demonstrate:

• Experience managing mechanical building services or HVAC&R projects
• A strong understanding of mechanical installations
• Experience managing projects from planning through to commissioning and handover
• Experience in the design and/or project management of one or more mechanical disciplines
• The ability to manage programmes, procurement, resources and competing priorities
• Good commercial awareness and an understanding of project financials
• Strong problem-solving skills with a practical, solution-focused approach
• Experience managing subcontractors and site teams
• Confidence dealing directly with clients and main contractors
• The ability to understand drawings, specifications and technical information
• The ability to work independently, use initiative and make decisions
• Strong organisational and time-management skills
• Excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills
• Good attention to detail and a process-driven approach
• A positive, proactive and professional attitude
• The ability to work independently as well as part of a wider project team
• A good understanding of construction health, safety and environmental requirements
• Competence with IT systems including Microsoft Project, Excel, Word and mobile-based project systems

Desirable Technical Experience

Experience in the design and/or project management of one or more of the following would be particularly useful:

• Ventilation
• Air conditioning
• Refrigeration
• Heating
• Plumbing
• Electrical services

You do not necessarily need to have managed £5m projects previously. Strong experience successfully delivering smaller projects and the capability to step up in value will be considered.
