About the Role

Contek Recruitment Solutions are representing an established manufacturing business based in Gainsborough, who are looking to appoint an experienced Head of Health, Safety & Environment to lead and continually improve health, safety and environmental standards across their manufacturing operation.

This is an opportunity for an experienced HSE professional to take ownership of site safety, provide leadership and direction, and work closely with senior management to embed a proactive approach to risk management, regulatory compliance and continuous improvement.

Working alongside an established H&S team, including dedicated co-ordination and administrative support, you will be responsible for ensuring effective management systems are maintained, risks are appropriately controlled and employees at all levels understand their responsibilities.

The successful candidate will combine strong technical knowledge with a visible, practical approach, providing leadership on the shop floor while contributing to wider business planning and operational decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

HSE Leadership & Management

• Lead the development and implementation of the site's health, safety and environmental strategy.
• Provide professional advice and guidance to directors, managers, supervisors and employees.
• Maintain and continually improve HSE management systems, policies, procedures and documentation.
• Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and applicable ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards.
• Set objectives, monitor performance and report on HSE matters to senior management.
• Develop and deliver improvement plans, ensuring actions are completed and progress is monitored.

Risk Management & Compliance

• Oversee risk assessments, method statements, safe systems of work and workplace inspections.
• Lead investigations into accidents, incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
• Coordinate internal audits, external assessments and regulatory inspections.
• Identify emerging risks and ensure appropriate preventative measures are implemented.
• Maintain accurate records and ensure statutory obligations are met.

Training & Safety Culture

• Promote a positive, proactive safety culture throughout the business.
• Ensure employees receive appropriate induction, training and refresher training.
• Engage with employees, safety representatives and departmental managers to improve working practices.
• Develop employee involvement in safety initiatives and continuous improvement.
• Provide coaching and support to strengthen accountability at all levels.

Environmental Management

• Oversee environmental compliance and support the development of environmental management systems.
• Monitor environmental performance and contribute to sustainability objectives.
• Identify opportunities to reduce waste, improve resource efficiency and minimise environmental impact.

Team & Stakeholder Management

• Lead and support the existing Health and Safety team, ensuring responsibilities and priorities are clearly defined.
• Work collaboratively with Engineering, Facilities, HR and Operations.
• Ensure effective communication and coordination across departments.
• Provide clear reporting on risks, incidents, compliance and improvement activities.

About You

• Proven experience in a senior Health, Safety or HSE role, ideally within manufacturing or an industrial environment.
• NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent higher-level health and safety qualification preferred.
• Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, risk management and management systems.
• Experience leading audits, investigations, risk assessments and continuous improvement programmes.
• Confidence advising senior management and influencing decisions across a business.
• Experience leading or mentoring HSE colleagues.
• Knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems.
• Strong communication, organisational and analytical skills.
• A visible, practical leadership style with the ability to engage employees at every level.

A relevant environmental qualification, Chartered IOSH status or experience within a complex manufacturing environment would be advantageous.

Salary & Benefits

• Salary of £55,000–£70,000 per annum, depending on experience.
• 25 days' annual leave, increasing with service to a maximum of 28 days.
